Well, I tried installing the 6.0 beta release of StarOffice, with no luck.

As root, I did a network install as they recommend (I want more than one
user to be able to use the thing, and I *don't* want a 200M package living
in each user's home directory), by running:

so-6_0-beta-bin-linux-en.bin -net

(The documentation in the .pdf file says to use a dash (-) and not a slash
(/), but I actually did try it both ways with the same end results.)

The install went fine. But when I then proceeded, as a regular user, to
run /usr/local/staroffice6.0/program/setup (or even soffice), all I got was
a segmentation fault. Bleh.

Thanks to all those who offered advise. But I guess I'm going to just have
to wait until they come out with a 6.0 final release next year and hope
that *that* one works better for me than the beta did (or 5.2 did).
