Newbies (the target audience of Mandrake) normally don't > do this. Because they are constantly being bombarded with the need to do so. This doesn't work - recompile kernel. That doesn't work - recompile kernel. This is broke - recompile kernel. That is broke - recomple kernel. Virtually all modems in new systems are driver dependent. The basic tools to make a system work right after a less than 100% working install should be installed by default. An entire development suite shouldn't be necessary, but what newbie is going to know the difference between full development package install and what he really needs to make his system work right? -- "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
