well, I am not sure about the effect it has in kppp, but in /etc/ppp/options you can add a statement for IDLE=xxx (where xxx is seconds so 300 would be 5 min. I know this works with "demand" dialing. are you sure the ftp download did not time out before the disconnect? sometimes if there is an incomming call, before the Phone Co centeral office answering service picks up it is a long enough time of "inactivity" to time out the server I am connected to.
