Are you looking to write a script where you would have the ability to run statements like "service some_program start" or some variation with "stop", "status", etc.? Yes, the easy part is to know where to put it (/etc/init.d and maybe /etc/rc5.d). Unfortunately the hard part is writing the script, and there is no substitute for a good book on bash scripting.
