sane-find-scanner (no "x") here gives:
# sane-find-scanner
# Note that sane-find-scanner will find any scanner that is connected
# to a SCSI bus. It will even find scanners that are not supported
# at all by SANE. It won't find a scanner that is connected to a
# parallel, USB or other non-SCSI port.
sane-find-scanner: found scanner "UMAX Astra 2400S V1.4" at device /dev/scanner
sane-find-scanner: found scanner "UMAX Astra 2400S V1.4" at device /dev/sg5
but... I too had problems initially, and all I seem to recall doing is making
the symlinks and permissions which now read:
# ll /dev/scanner /dev/sg5
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 8 Oct 22 07:19 /dev/scanner -> /dev/sg5
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 36 Oct 22 07:15 /dev/sg5 ->
scsi/host0/bus0/target5/lun0/generic
# ll /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target5/lun0/generic
crw-rw---- 1 pfortin root 21, 5 Dec 31 1969
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target5/lun0/generic
^^^^^^^
Adjust your sg# and host#/bus#/target#/lun# to wherever your scanner is at...
