cool, well I am following Charles's instructions on getting rpmdrake working
again, if that works, I can use it to find out what the deps are for
XFree86-3.3.x are, and install the lot from scratch..

I generally don't like doing the upgrade off the CD, it seems risky and
takes ages.. (and I can't boot from the CD on this system which means I have
to do the whole CDROM.img on a floppy, then make the mem-119 and stuff to
get the shared memory for the video card, and thats all alot of trouble just
to install a few RPM's, so if rpmdrake can tell me, thats the go... :-)

Thanks for the tip though, its now my "last resort" and at least I now have
one :-)

No, what I (think I) did was just go do an upgrade, and select 3.3.6
version and all went well. (is this clear? what I mean is, once
it was all installed, I either did a full install or I booted on
the install CD and said 'upgrade' (using expert mode - I've not
used the other mode in so long I have no idea what the differences
are!). Then, if I remember right, it just worked i.e. I answered
the minimum questions I could get away with to get to the X
install part, and it finally got there - and asked me
what version of X I wanted (and it was rather quick, since no
packages needed upgrading ;-). I chose 3.3.6 and made sure that
it was right using the check mode, then I was done...)

Hope this helps and is less than confusing!

(I'm busy installing the subfloor for ceramic tile right now,
so my reply times will be rather long!)
