I can't shed any light, but I can perhaps cheer you up a bit by telling you that the same happens here.
I was going to demo tuxracer (and Linux) to my kids. I looked a right idiot when it wouldn't work. I had carefully checked that it worked fine, but had done so as root and then switched to an ordinary user for the actual demo. Needless to say, the kids weren't impressed.
