hi,

i'm stumped on this one...

I had installed a bunch of TrueType fonts downloaded from a free fonts
site ... and they worked fine for a while, but then this problem started
where most of the fonts appeared as this one hard-to-read font. So I
removed all the fonts I installed with drakfont to get back to the
standards. Now the fonts mostly work right. But for some reason in GIMP,
I select a font in the selection dialog, but then GIMP says it cannot be
found.

For example, something very standard like Helvetica won't work in a
"script-fu" logo. The error is:

Font '-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-240-240-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1' not
fond.

But it IS installed, and does preview correctly in the font selector.

And it seems that KDE thinks those fonts are still there. If I go into
Control Center and then System/Konsole and try to change the font, all
those fonts I uninstalled are still listed in the "custom" font dialog.

In KWord, the uninstalled fonts are still listed, and fonts that are
installed, like Helvetica, are not listed.

There's probably some simple thing to fix, some fixer script to run, I
just don't know what it is.

This machine is Mandrake 8.0 on a PPC, with many packages upgraded from
the Cooker, including XFree86-4.1.0

thanks for any help!
