The valid options for DESKTOP= are only: - KDE - GNOME - AnotherLevel because there is no more options in /etc/X11/prefdm if /etc/sysconfig/desktop does not exist, you can create it with the desired option. For LM 8 and 8.1 the file must start with DESKTOP=.
