I was searching the archives, and came across a discussion of a problem
I've been having. The discussion is at:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg42004.html

Briefly, Bastille sets up system limits which catch pam_auth trying to
create an enormous file. You run into the problem by trying to "su"
from an xterm, which returns the error "File size limit exceeded".
pam_auth is trying to create the file:
~/.xauth/refcount/root/<hostname>/unix\:0

I've also located a RedHat bugzilla report which describes the same
problem:
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=49437

The problem can be traced to a bug in PAM (pam_xauth). The RedHat folks
say they have fixed it in their pam-0.75-16 RPM. Does anyone know of a
Mandrake RPM which fixes this problem? I've seen an updated PAM package
on Cooker, but there's no indication in the changelog that this problem
is fixed.
