Well, for starters FreeBSD uses the BSD kernel, and Mandrake uses the Linux kernel. :)
I haven't had much experience with FreeBSD, or any of the BSD's for that matter, and even so it was only ever very minor remote tasks. Thus, I can't tell you anything about running daemons nor the locate command.
