I don't know if this is your problem, but there's an errata note on the Mandrake site which documents a problem with the 2.4.8 kernel (biospnp) in LM8.1 and the VIA KT266A chipset-based motherboards. Workaround is to append nobiospnp to the linux boot command line. Worked for me. Brett
