Hi, If you are a poor soul using an Intel 810 mainboard then the devfs experience is even worse. You will NEVER get your CDROM to work because /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 will NOT be registered. What you need to do in order to get a 2.4.8 kernel working is:
A) BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE MAKE SURE THAT YOU BOOT FROM THE SECOND CD WITH A 2.2.19 KERNEL AND FINISH THE INSTALLATION AS USUAL. THIS GIVES YOU A BACKUP KERNEL TO BOOT THE SYSTEM WITH IF 2.4.8 FAILS TO DELIVER! a) Download the 2.4.17 kernel source and recompile the kernel DISABLING automatic mounting of devfsd. Install the kernel image in /boot, make modules etc. b) Use some sort of init wrapper to start booting and mount devfsd on /dev before other file systems are mounted. (Search the net some are available from the IBM guys) c) Make use of a /dev-state/compat directory with the mixer and dsp devices for your soundcard (otherwise sound will not work) d) Uninstall the 2.4.8 kernel, edit /etc/lilo.conf and rerun lilo e) Uninstall MDK 8.1's devfsd by rpm -e --nodeps devfsd Recompile the latest devfsd from source and install it. Check the /etc/devfsd.conf and the /etc/modules.devfsd files for consistency and be very careful here. Reboot! If all goes well then all will work and Mandrake 8.1 with KDE looks good and easy to use. I am sure that there will always be issues as the release cannot be tested on ALL hardware, but surely ..... an ordinary home user cannot be expected to write wrappers, create devices using MAKEDEV in /dev-state/compat, install a 2.2 kernel as backup ....etc.etc for 4 -5 days of his spare time to get things going. I could not get things to work with a 2.4.8 kernel but with a 2.4.17 things work fine and smoothly. Mandrake 8.1 is good but the guys at Mandrakesoft could look at these issues for the 8.2 release.
