I'm not saying NFS isn't "fine" with linux. I've used it a lot also. But
I'm interested in ways of making it perform its best. In the past I've
heard of patches to improve linux NFS performance, so that's why I posted
the question ;-)

As far as ReiserFS with NFS, DON'T do it. Unless they have fixed their
problems, reiser is NOT 100% compatible with NFS. At one time I built an
NFS server using reiserfs with knfsd and had MAJOR problems with high
loads of nfs activity. It's a fact that reiser has problems with knfsd,
and I don't know if they've ever fixed it. It does work well with nfsd
(the user-space nfs daemon), but that makes it terribly slow and uses up a
lot of resources (cpu+ram) in comparison with knfsd.
