Yes, that was indeed a very bad bug. It has been fixed in Cooker some
time ago and so won't be present on future releases anymore.

kterm is special as it has special handling of Japanese (and only Japanese);
but for all other programs you need, in order to input or view Japanese
text, to launch the program from a locale supporting it.

So, you should set your locale to Japanese and not to Englmish.

If you want Japanese support yet English menus, I suggest to put the following
in your $HOME/.i18n file:

LC_ALL=ja
LANGUAGE=C

You need of course the "locales-ja" package installed.

When choosing Japanese language during install that is what you get; well,
that is what you should get; I apologize for the bug of kinput not being
installed.
