I just cannot figure this out.

I have an IBM ThinkPad 1412, Celeron 366, 96MB Ram, ESS Solo1 soundcard. The
sound NEVER works if I just install default Mandrake kernels. It loads
modules, even the correct modules, but sound never comes - so I always build
my own kernels with the solo1 driver built into the kernel.

I get sound working temporarily with kernel-2.4.8-34.1mdk and with kernel
2.4.17 from kernel.org (cannot get the Mandrake 2.4.17 kernel to work even
though I can get it to build - always with the "kernel panic: VFS unable to
load root fs at 01:00" no matter what settings I make in xconfig). When I
first startup and login, sound works (KDE 2.2.1). After some period of time
between 30 minutes to an hour sound no longer works. There are no error
messages, no sound-related messages ANYWHERE to indicate that there is a
problem. Sound just quits. I have looked in /var/log/messages,
.xsession-errors (with and without debugging messages enabled with artsd) and
nothing ever presents itself to explain the loss.

I have run into another situation while sound is working that I don't know
what to make of, nor do I know if it is somehow related. I have a wireless
lan card (ZoomAir prism2) and several wlan sniffing/monitoring apps. Kismet
is a nice one - it logs all detected wireless lan traffic with network names,
whether or not wep is enabled, and lots more. It also has a couple wav files
associated with it - one sound to indicate a new network was detected and
another sound to indicate lan traffic. While running kismet, the sound is
working OK but then, periodically, a high-pitched squeel comes form my
speakers and the cursor freezes. It takes about 5 seconds when a message
pops up "CPU overload, artsd aborting" at which point the system functions
normally again WITH sound...but then I get messages indicating that artsd was
unable to connect to server /tmp/mcop-praedor<some-mcop-file-name-string>.

Another thing that I am still trying to determine if it is a player in the
problem is APM and/or the screensaver. If I come to my laptop after the
screen has blanked in power save mode (~30 minutes), I have found that sound
is no longer working. Logging out and logging back (restarting my kde
session) wont bring it back. The only thing that brings it back is a full
reboot.

I have also lost sound, on a couple occasions, when I close the laptop with
while it is still running. Everything else that is going on (compiling a
kernel or something else) continues OK but it seems that sound gets lost.
I just cannot be certain at this point if sound was lost 1) before power
saving went into affect; or 2) if it was lost prior to my closing the laptop
lid. In none of these situations has any sounds been playing at the time of
the system change.

If I open up kcontrol and restart the soundserver, it restarts OK and
.xsession-errors doesn't indicate any problems (I have debugging enabled now)
- it actually indicates that the soundserver restarted OK and that the sound
was actually played (no it wasn't). My sound mixer has all the appropriate
volume settings set properly too.

Anyone have any ideas here?
