ok, I just had similar issues with my laptop install with 8.1. Make sure you try the "vgalo" option after pressing F1 at the splash screen. if that doesn't work, try "text" and as a last resort "text expert" at the same prompt after restarting. also, when your install locks up, press Ctrl-Alt-F4 and tell us what you see there. it should give you what the kernel is thinking at the stage it locks up.
