It seems like I found the exact problem: There is no
vmlinuz image in my /boot directory, and none got
created when trying to update the installation.
Without a kernel image there is no way the system
could boot, but unfortunately I don't know where to
get Mandrake's version of the kernel without access to
a linux system.
