Question: Will the next release after 8.2 be 9.0 or is there some chance an 8.3 will be released 6 months or so after 8.2? If there is a chance of that, what will determine whether it is 9.0 or 8.3?
Background: A question came up on our LUG about whether Mandrake 8.2 would be especially stable and bug free. I mentioned the cooker process, but then the question came up about whether there was anything special done with a .2 release vs. .0 release, or whether any extra stability was just the result of testing and experience with .0 and .1. And the question came up about how Mandrake decides whether a new release will be a major or a point release. I understand that 8.2 will not include KDE 3 for reasons related to the lack of available testing time after release of KDE3 and before release of Mandrake 8.2 (which suits me fine, I think -- I'd like Mandrake 8.2 to be super stable / bug free, like Mandrake 7.2 has been (for me -- with the UpdateFreq -- almost forgot that I installed the UpdateFreq)). My impression at this time is that Mandrake goes through a cycle -- .0, .1, .2, next major release (.0), ..., without particular regard to the content of those releases -- or is there something about the content that will decide whether the next release is a major or point release? (Things like the kernel version, rpm version 3 vs. 4, glibc, or whatever.) Thanks, Randy Kramer
