Tom,
  It's possible to tunnel VNC over ssh.  Two ways. tight vnc has a switch
built in (-tunnel) for regular VNC (wich you seem to have) try this link 
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/sshvnc.html

It covers how to use VNC over ssh.  That way you don't need to open
additional ports.
