I found out that some of the documentation is now misleading. It references 
/etc/smb.conf but newer versions of Samba have the default config files in 
/etc/samba/smb.conf

The effect was the same as you described. What happened is that I told it to 
use eth1 as interface, but in the /etc/smb.conf which was ignored. The eth0 
was on the firewall and that is what was defined in the /etc/samba/smb.conf. 
Once I overwrote that file with the one I wanted, it all worked.
