One curiosity. I remember that when I installed kups and cups on my system cups-drivers somehow isn't installed by default. With 8.1 it is cups-drivers-1.1-15mdk. I do remember having a problem back with 7.2 that was caused by this one not being installed. Is it on your system? It seems that the database of drivers is in the cups rpm the actual drivers are in the cups-drivers rpm.
