Exactly HOW are you running fetchmail? I assume that you're either running it from a shell directly, or periodically via a cron job. If from the shell, how are you logged in at the time that you run fetchmail? Are you logged in as skippi or another user? If via a cron job, which user created the crontab entry for that job? skippi? root? Something else? /var/mail is simply a soft link to /var/spool/mail, BTW. Look in /var/spool/mail.
