My sound card seems to be configured correctly - I can play MP3s in
Nautilus and XMMS, and both GNOME and Sawfish sound events are working
correctly. However, if I put an audio CD in the CD drive and attempt to
play it either with Grip or with the CD Player applet then I hear no
sound, even though the CD is spinning and the track time counter is
turning in both apps. I have checked that the CD volume isn't at zero or
muted in the Audio Mixer.

I had been having enormous problems with devfs in Mandrake 8.1, and I
have just disabled it. Audio CD playback wasn't working before or after
disabling devfs however. I suspect that it didn't work before because
devfs is pants, and isn't working now because some crucial symbolic link
or device file is missing from /dev. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm using a simple analog cable connection between my CD-ROM drive and
my soundcard. (Playing audio CDs worked on this machine with Mdk7.x.)

I can send anyone detailed listings of /dev but at the moment I'm not
sure what to look for.

One final thing: having disabled devfs everything else is working fine,
and so I think that this must be one of those "make this symbolic link
to that" type issues, or a "check the permissions on this" one. I did
read over everything I could find at MandrakeUser, MandrakeForum and
MandrakeExpert, but nothing helped.

TIA, Darren
