This thread has surprised me by how it's gone on. type 'arch' in a
term and it'll tell you what you have, eg,
~ $ arch
i686
More pertinent might be ... 'so what?'. In my experience with a PII
(350@467), a PIII (katmai 450@600) and'a Tbird ([EMAIL PROTECTED], same ram all
3 systems), compiling for i686 or athlon often proves slower.
Nothin scientific, I used the clock on the microwave (computer's
in the kitchen) to test mozilla, and kernel compiles ... ie, a
minute ;~> i686, or athlon, proved slower more times than not.
Specially with kernels compiled for i686 or athlon, rather than
Mandrake's 'stock' i586 kernels. Even against testing usin 'optimized'
'trimmed down' kernels to run the tests.
What does make a diff, is if you can time your ram to cas2-2-2 with
4 bank interleaving ;> You'll probly need to up your IOv a touch and
have very good ram/motherboard/PS. Buyin a fancier cpu/ram won't always
get it ;) Ready made computers will always be marginal performers.
