I haven't used either for backup / synchronization.  I have used rsync
to correct the md5sum on a large downloaded file (a .iso), and I lurk on
the rsync mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I sure both have there pros and cons.  It sounds like rsync may have
some difficulty dealing with deleted files -- that is deleting a file
deleted on the laptop from the backup.  I can't readily recite any
details, but it may be something you want to dig into.  (I think it's a
problem for most backup tools.)
