Well, in *theory*, you're right. But this holds only so long true, as you write "pure" SQL and don't use any special RDBMS dependent optimizations. So, while you can very easily switch the backend, you really have to take a lot of precautions to ensure that the application still works after the switch. And while I also very much love PHP (and despise Perl for web development), it's also very easy to switch the DB backend in Perl, thanks to the nice DBI package.
