I've been having this problem for quite a while: on my desktop machine running 8.1, and on a Dell at work on which I just installed 8.2 RC1. The permissions for my ~/.gnome/gdm file are as "Mr. Necro" suggested they should be.
When I ran the GDM Configurator and change the default Session to Gnome, a symbolic link is created in "/etc/X11/gdm/Sessions" called "default" that points to the file "Gnome" in the same directory. However, when I rebooted the machine, a new link was created called "Default" that pointed to KDE. And when I went back to GDM Configurator, KDE was highlighted as the default session. I figured out that /usr/sbin/fndSession, which is run by /etc/init.d/mandrake_everytime on startup, is creating the "Default" link. Why are there two links in the first place? Is gdm just looking at the wrong one? (Do I even need to build these sessions every time I reboot?) I'm on my way to tracing fndSessions steps to try to fix/prevent this, but if someone has already invented this wheel, I'd like to hear about it. - Kathy "Mr. Necro" wrote: > Hey, when I wanted to change my default session for gdm I simply did as > you did and went into > > /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions > > then I opened up Default and default in emacs, then simply changed the > line to the one found in the Gnome file (also in /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions). > I backed up all the files for the original directory, then saved > everything (as root of course) and rebooted. > > I don't know if you already did this, or if I'm telling you things that > are redundant, but that's what I did and it seemed to fix the problem, > as my default is now Gnome and I don't have to manually select it from > sessions any longer.
