David, Are you *sure* it's completely stopped...? Can you still ping or even ssh into the box?
If so, issue "telinit 3" and "telinit 5"... if that brings it back to life, I'd be really interested in knowing if Ctl+Alt+Fn locks it up again... My desktop is in this state now... everything looks fine; but I can't switch to a virtual console (had this problem on my laptop too) without locking up again... While many people suggest hardware problems, I'm not convinced when I see the problem on more than one system and when a reload clears up a problem which won't go away by simply restarting X... Reboot is only required to clear up the Ctl+Alt+Fn lockups, and I *HATE* rebooting... :> Did I mention this never happened with X 3.*; only since X 4.*...? Pierre
