To keep the story short, I will assume that you have a strong background with Linux.
1) get and install the kernel source rpm 2) apply the acpi patch acpi-20020308-2.4.17.diff (at sourceforge) 3) apply the failed fixmap.h hunk by hand as a permanent_fixed_address 4) build the kernel and modules (see kernel howto for details) 5) install new kernel and modules 6) build and install new acpid (sourceforge) 7) update your boot loader (lilo, grub, whatever) Many of these steps are non trivial and should not be attempted unless you really understand them in whole. Oh, I have been using acpi on my Vaio laptop since August with the Mandrake series and several different kernels. Works well.
