I've fixed my problem... It appears to be only a kde thing.  I was able to 
print from kde by enabling "Ghostscript Prefiltering: Convert to PS Level 2" 
under the Properties->Advanced kprint menu.  I'm not sure why I have to do 
this or what kde sends to my printer by default.  If any body has a better 
understanding of this, I would sure be interested.
