I think the command "uname -a" shows the date and time that the kernel was 
compiled.
Here's the output from my system (Mandrake 8.2)

tim ~ $ date
Mon Apr  1 04:06:54 AST 2002
tim ~ $ uname -a
Linux linux 2.4.18-6mdk #1 Fri Mar 15 02:59:08 CET 2002 i686 unknown
