first, about the sounds: no problem, just go to
 control center --> sound ---> sound server
and disable aRts. this will keep your sound setting the way they were
before your install.

all other problems are solved by deleting your ~/.kde  and ~/.kde2
directories. everything will be fine when you log in the next time.
