Hi, I'm Not a PPC user, but use firewire hard drives/dvd-r drive with i86 linux (mandrake 8.2). I just modprobe ohci1394 and it usually takes care of stuff for the firewire bus, (loads, ieee1394, ohci1394, and sbp2 if disks are detected). I'm not sure how the apple hardware works, so give modprobe ohci1394 a shot. also try insmod raw1394 and running gscanbus to see if you can see your controller and devices.
