My understanding is that only one process can have access to the sound device at a time. To allow multiple applications to use the sound device, a single process grabs the /dev/dsp (probably esd does this) and then provides access to the other applications. Soundwrapper is likely wrapping xmms in a manner allowing it to use esd. >
