Unfortunately I must report that our AMD/VIA problems have not been solved by changing to another net-board. Linux-Mandrake 8.2 crashed during a write to an IDE disk on the PC from an SGI server with an IDE partition on the PC mounted via NFS.
This could all be referred to the much written about problems with the VIA chipset, if it was not for a new development. We have just installed LM 8.2 on a dual Pentium 4 server, and exactly the same thing happened when files were written onto an IDE partition on the P4 via NFS. I have thus difficulties understanding this problem as being primarily due to the VIA chipset. The chipset in the dual P4 is Intel based. We have had none of these difficulties while running various PCs under Linux-Mandrake 8.1 and the 2.4.8 kernel. Question for someone at Mandrake: Have there been reports on problems with the new VM system in the 2.4.18 kernel? Or is it a problem with NFS? We would like to know if we must step back to LM 8.1, or if we should wait for the 2.4.19 kernel? Any information from other users of NFS mounted file systems under LM 8.2 is highly appreciated. -- Bjarne Thomsen Institute of Physics and Astronomy University of Aarhus Denmark
