Thank you - the machine in question is at home, so I'll look at that log later tonite 
and 
hopefully figure something out. As far as which window manager - I tried KDE, 
Enlightenment, and gnome, and all produced the same results. I doubt any of the other 
window managers would have behaved differently...

Also, I'm using XFree86 4.2.0, and my video card is a Radeon 7500 w/ 3D accel 
enabled. (figured I'd mention that since this problem involves X...)
