For X86 the important option is to enable the root filesystem on NFS and all the NFS support. Specifically, build the following statically into the kernel: Under Networking Options enable "Kernel Level Autoconfig", DHCP and if needed, BOOTP. Under FileSystems|Network FileSystems, enable "NFS File System Support" and "Root Filesystem on NFS" Build the kernel, putting as much as you can into modules. At this point, you'll just need to specify the nfs kernel on the boot options to your kernel. This varies somewhat with the version, but should be fairly close to what the HOWTO says. It works absolutely fine with Mandrake. BTW, I use the RPM system to create my NFS filesystems by using the --root option. You can quickly build one using packages from distribution disks.
