I tried the official mandrake rpms soon after KDE3.0 was released. I found them to be full of bugs and incompatibilities but I think they have got them pretty much under control now. I use the rpms from pclinuxonline.com Texstar's rpms rule. He has chopped out a lot of debugging code so some of the packages are ~50% smaller. I simply downloaded all non-devel rpms to a directory and issued urpmi *.rpm as root. Doesn't get much easier than that. The only thing I changed apart from adding kde3 to the list of window managers was to edit the last line of my /etc/inittab to read x:5:respawn:/opt/kde3/bin/kdm -nodaemon this forces the use of kdm as the window manager. kde2.2.1 is still installed but I never use it any more.
