Harddrake says Ensoniq 5800 AudioPCI, kernel module es1371.

Each piece of Midi music gives me two play options:

Midi and Karaoke Player
Midi Synth.

The first leads to the no /dev/sequencer` problem, the second plays
the midi beautifully and shows the karaoke worde, but in a too-small
font.   Why is a sequencer apparently needed only by the first?
