I had a simular but not exactly the same problem with Eterm under
ice-wm and 8.2 Seems that Eterm cannot write to the MAIN file that
stores it's preferences etc. I had to move that one to my home
directory chmod it to my user.group, and then do a symlink from
/usr/X11R6/share/Eterm/ back to it. (a hack but the box has only one
user... me.) The TMOUT I belive is TimeOut and that's what's
happening when bash tries to open it. Look in /var/log/messages for
more info (hopefully) on the error. I'd look for a file that Eterm
needs to write to, that it can't.
