Yeah, the stock 8.2 kernel is broken to death in this regard. If you look in your /var/log/messages, you'll see the kernel oopsing. Mandrake has *still* not released an "official" 8.2 updated kernel to fix this, although the very next cooker kernel fixed it 100%. Go look for 2.4.18-7mdk.
