A lot of the ops are cocky and do have this need to demonstrate their power. That, I will agree, is annoying.
But the thing is, each of the channels is run by somebody. They have their little "op clubs" for the rooms, and have "meetings" etc; My only complaint about OPN, which is where I spend most of my IRC time, is the frequent netsplits, and lilo lobbying for money from the uses of OPN. Yet those messages have stopped as of late. There are times we are harsh on the newbies, and you see a RTFM or a STFW. But some times people don't even try to find the information. But we try and help when we can.
