Last night, about 4AM, I finally realized my stupid mistake. After every
kernel recompile I hadn't been rebuilding the NVIDIA_GLX and
NVIDIA_kernel packages. It seemed to be about 50/50 whether or not it
would actually work. This explained why adding a seemingly innocuous
option would stop X from starting. No framebuffer, but at least
accidentally pressing a CTRL/Fkey won't require a reboot.

I'll start experimenting with SVGATextMode later.
