This error - I guess - comes the (su=root) calls kups of kde2. Look on your PATH as root. You should put something like "export PATH=/opt/kde3/bin:$PATH" in .bashrc in root. I had similar problems when starting kde-programs as su and found as su/root I did not have the correct path to kde3 programs.
