Here's what I would do.... 

1. cp /etc/X-11/XF86Config to /etc/X11/XF86Config.bkp (always good to
backup)
2 ctrl-alt-f1 to a console.
3.telinit 3 .... switches you out of X and into runlevel 3
4. Run drakxconf from the command line
5. Choose Change Monitor (or it may be change monitor resolution it
isn't in front of me but you can find it easy enough.)
6. When the window comes up choose cancel  this will put you in the mode
to do a new configuration.
7. Run through the configuration as you normally would choosing 4.2.0
instead of 3.6
8. Choose start X on startup (unless you prefer to use startX)
9. run telinit 5 and you should be using 4.2 instead of 3.6

If any problem occurs you can always re-run drakxconf and since you
saved XF86Config moving it back to it's original name will restore
previous settings.
