  Probably if you do which java on your comp it will come back with the
old java.... Not the new one.  One of the shortcomings of java.  The
java you want to use needs to be included in your path.  So you'll need
to edit .bashrc or better yet /etc/profile to get the path to javac
included in your path.  Sun site should (did) have a detailed
discription of this.  Java write once run everywhere.... if you wrote it
on a laptop. *grin*
