Does Mandrake use screen? How is it used?

I found a ~/.screenrc file on both my Mandrake 8.2 and 7.2
installations, so I assume (I know ;-) ) that both versions of Mandrake
use screen.

On the screen manpage, under bindkey, it says that if I enter:

bindkey -t foo stuff foobar

in my ~/.screenrc file I should be able to type "foo" and get "foobar",
and I assumed that should work in any X application. (For some reason,
I'm assuming that all the stuff that runs in X somehow runs "on top" of
screen.)

On Mandrake 7.2, I restarted the X server and then tried typing
foo<space> in konsole, nedit, and konqueror (editing a textarea). No
luck!

Any clues? Corrections of my misunderstandings?
