HOT DAMN! You are the man!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!! This is it guys. There must be some sort of bug in the new Nvidia driver that my system doesn't like! Woo hoo!! I've pissed away an afternoon trying to get this thing to work I used the older tar as you suggested and bam, startx loads just fine. I'm going to go play with Mandrake 9.0 :)
