This is where I see your problem coming in.  I just saw a little blurb
about this on the Linux kernel mailing list.  I do not know if you can
fix it right now without compiling your own custom kernel.  Even then, I
think it was in the 2.5 kernel, not the 2.4 series.  So you might be out
of luck for a while.

However, I noticed that you were using ALSA for your sound.  I suggest
that you run draksound and switch to the OSS driver and see if it makes
a difference.
